The Cape of Visibility

How we present ourselves to the world is how we are received. As it turns to winter, I’ve been thinking about capes lately and the people and superheroes who wear them.

I wonder why exactly someone wears a cape? What does it do? Is it about status and clan or is it functional by making us appear bigger and faster than we really are? Is it a protective blanket or can
it help you to soar above your situation and circumstances?

Batman and Superman wore them, Wonder Woman did too. My favorite cape wearers are Underdog and Napoleon. Superman’s cape flew out like his flag behind him as he moved around the globe on his
quests. It was awesome. Napoleon wore one and rode a donkey into battle, but in his portraits, his cape flies high behind him while he rides a valiant steed. Underdog, humble and lovable Underdog, wore one with pride.

A cape doesn’t really DO anything, but it seems to make a difference in others’ perceptions and perhaps in how we see ourselves. A cape adds a dash of mystery and a dose of power to any endeavor. Lately, I’ve seen powerful women don the cape. Somehow it elevates their style and sends a message. I’m soaring high. I’m aiming high. I can soar and fly and be the superhero in my own life. I don’t really need a new winter coat, but I have my eye on an Irish wool cape.
